The Lockheed U-2 was originally designed for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency for use as a high altitude photo reconnaissance, or “spy plane”.
Used extensively during the “cold war” for operations over the Soviet Union it operated at extreme altitudes and beyond the reach of the Soviet weaponry. In one instance a U-2 was lost to Soviet action, which allowed the capture of the pilot, effectively ending mission over Russia. Variants of the U-2 are still in use today with the US Air Force.
