The Spanish and Mexican explorers, governors and army commandments who pioneered what would ultimately become one of America’s finest cities could not anticipate the gold fever which would take the city by storm. But by December of 1849, Gold Rush fever jettisoned the population to nearly 30,000 and the City by the Bay was officially on its way.
