“Lego” is a combination of two Danish words – ‘leg’ and ‘godt’ – which combined mean “play well” and started out manufacturing wooden toys until its founder came up with the idea for the now iconic little plastic, interlocking bricks in 1949. The Lego brick as we know it today was patented in 1958 and after a factory fire in 1960 the company would focus solely on their and stopped the production of wooden toys. That would work out quite well for LEGO, as the company is now arguably the world’s biggest toy manufacturer and sells seven sets every second - 28 sets around Christmas time. What began in Billund, Denmark has become a global icon with an entire subculture developed around the bricks and LEGO has expanded into film and TV with hit movies like The LEGO Movie (and its sequel), The LEGO Batman Movie, and The LEGO Ninjago Movie, and various television series including a building competition show called LEGO Masters. There are eight LEGOLAND amusement parks across the globe which draw almost 16 billion visitors annually, numerous yearly conventions where the most skilled of builders can show off their creations, and even professional Lego artists who have shown their work in famous art museums and venues.
Don't Forget DUPLO!
For those too young to play with the sometimes seemingly microscopic Lego bricks the but still want to get in on the fun, there is the DUPLO line of building blocks. Designed for children aged 1 1/2 to 5-years old, these bricks are twice the length, height, and width of regular bricks (such as those used to build the Star Wars Millennium Falcon), making them easier to handle and less likely to be swallowed by younger children. Despite their size, they're still compatible with the traditional bricks and just as much fun! DUPLO still has many of the same licenses as their big, or rather small, brother in the Lego brick. You can find DC and Marvel Superheroes DUPLO sets and various Disney properties like Frozen, Cars, and Toy Story which are just as exciting and varied as regular Lego sets.
