Green Lantern is the name of several superheroes appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. The first (Alan Scott) was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell in All-American Comics #16 (July 1940), and the best known is Hal Jordan, created by John Broome and Gil Kane in Showcase #22 (Oct. 1959). Each Green Lantern possesses a Power Ring that gives the user great control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and the strength to wield it.
The 2011 film from director Martin Campbell stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Peter Sarsgaard. It tells the story of a test pilot granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.
