Formerly known as Captain Marvel, this fictional comic book superhero is the brainchild of writer Bill Parker and artist C. C. Beck, who created the character in 1939. He first appeared in February 1940's Whiz Comics #2, published by Fawcett Comics, and believe it or not was the most popular superpowered character of the 1940s, outselling even Superman! He's the alter ego of Billy Batson, an orphaned 12-year-old New York City boy who by speaking a magic word that's an acronym formed of the first letters of the names of six "immortal elders" - Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury - can transform himself into a full-grown adult with superhuman strength, speed, flight, and other magical powers and abilities. The 2019 American film is based on this comics character and is the first film version of him since the Republic Pictures 1941 serial Adventures of Captain Marvel. It's also the first full-length feature film ever centered on the hero.
