Where Does the Name Come From?

The name comes from a term used to denote the United States soldier. In turn, that term was derived from the more general word "G.I." that was short for "Government Issue" or "General Issue," and before that, "galvanized iron." As the years went by, but long before G.I. Joe collectibles came into being and became so popular, the term came into widespread use and gradually replaced "Doughboy" that was used in World War I. Then, in 1945, American General Dwight D. Eisenhower stated that "the truly heroic figure of this war [is] G.I. Joe and his counterpart in the air, the navy, and the Merchant Marine of every one of the United Nations."

The Evolution of a Hero

G.I. Joe dolls and figures didn't appear in their present form overnight. In fact, the original 12-inch tall line was introduced in February 1964. This line was licensed to British toy manufacturer Palitoy and was known as "Action Man." Things really got exciting when Hasbro relaunched the line in 1982, in 3 3/4-inch scale and including playsets, vehicles, and the detailed backstory that led to G.I. Joe Cobra action figures and the struggles by Joe to save the world from takeover by these evil baddies. While the line evolved into the uber-popular Real American Hero series, Action Man also changed and was renamed "Action Force." So now you can get your good guys and the G.I. Joe Cobra toys to oppose them and do battle to your heart's content!
