Are you a fan of baseball? Join the club! The first officially recorded baseball game in U.S. history took place on June 19, 1846, and baseball is arguably as popular today as it's ever been. There's baseball for just about everyone, from tee-ball and Pee Wee leagues for the little ones through high school, college, and professional Major League Baseball. Not yet a fan? Let us explain. Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each. The goal is to score "runs" by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and touching a series of four markers called "bases," arranged at the corners of a 90-foot square, or "diamond." Players take turns hitting (offense), while the other team (the defense) tries to stop them from scoring runs by getting hitters "out." A player on offense can stop at any of the bases and hope to score on a teammate's hit. The teams switch between offense and defense whenever the hitting team gets three outs.
