MLB Historical Beginnings Ted Williams Statue:Of his many outstanding years in Boston, the summer of 1941 stands out as one of Ted Williams' best. That magical season closed with the ''Splendid Splinter'' leading the American League in home runs (37), walks (147), runs scored (135), slugging average (.735), and on-base percentage (.551 – the MLB record until 2002). Batting an astonishing .405 prior to the All-Star break, Ted finished even stronger to close the season at .406. The .400 plateau has not been touched since.
