He was named National League MVP in 1949 after leading the league in hitting (.342) and steals (37), while knocking in 124 runs. He closed out his MLB career in 1956 with a .311 batting average. Six years later, he became the first African-American player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. On the 50th anniversary of his breaking the color barrier, all of Major League Baseball saluted Robinson by permanently retiring his number from the game.
