Rosie the Riveter is no ordinary gal! Her image was used to promote the Women Ordinance Workers (WOWs) during World War II, and her confident declaration of "We can do it!" inspired millions of women to drop their brooms and pick up rivet guns and wrenches.
America's women-- the mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters of men called into the military-- lined up at factories and shipyards to take their places. They built the planes, ships, and military equipment needed for the war effort.
After the war, it became apparent that Rosie's influence reached beyond the shipyards and factories. The WOWs didn't know it at the time, but they blazed the trail for women in the workplace and set the stage for the women's rights movement.
