During WWII the USMC was involved in many amphibious landing in the Pacific Theatre and among them was the famous landing at Tarawa. Marines of the 2nd Division began the assault on November 20th, 1943 against a heavily fortified beachhead and 4,800 Japanese Navy troops. By the afternoon of November 23rd, Tarawa was in American hands. Losses on both sides were extremely high giving rise to the term "Bloody Tarawa".
