Originally created in 1831 by King Louis Phillipe II as a way to rid France of immigrants and other "undesirables", today's Foreign Legion has evolved into an elite unit in the service of the French Army. Equipped and armed as the rest of the French Army they primarily a rapid deployment force, with a strength of about 8,200 men. The Legion has seen numerous actions from the battlefields of World War I to its participation in "Desert Shield". Other famous actions include the long running siege at Dien-Bien-Phu, in 1953/4 and the Battle at Camerone, mexico in 1863.
