The Starfleet communicator is one of the most iconic and recognizable props in sci-fi history, and it's had a wide variety of design changes over the centuries. These have ranged from the compact unit used in the 22nd Century to the more bulky subspace units used a century later, and finally, the form of combadges during the 24th Century. The communicator of the Enterprise NX-01 owes its design elements to the mobile phones of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
