He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is arguably the most successful animated series ever produced by Filmation. It debuted on TV in September 1983 and in its two seasons it became one of the eraās defining pieces of media for younger audiences. He-Manās two seasons consisted of 65 episodes each and ended in 1985 but thanks to syndication the show found success even long after the finals episode aired. The show aired in syndication until 1990 and its success had a profound effect on the syndicated cartoon market. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was actually one of the first childrenās shows to air in first-run syndication, meaning it was created rather specifically to be sold into syndication. Considering its success in syndication and cultural significance, itās no surprise that the series maintains a hard-core cult following to this day. Many of those who worked on this original He-Man cartoon like Paul Dini, one of the developers of the widely beloved Batman The Animated Series which aired from 1992 through 1995, would go on to have successful careers developing other popular animated properties.
The original He-Man series takes place on the mythical, magical planet of Eternia and follows the adventures of Prince Adam as he defends the land from the evil Skeletor and his minions. Adam wields the Power Sword and can be transformed into He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, by lifting the sword above his head and proclaiming, "By the Power of Grayskull, I have the Power!" This magic comes from the mystical Castle Greyskull that Skeletor aims to conquer. With its magic, Skeletor would have the power to conquer Eternia and potentially the entire universe. Aiding He-Man in his battle against Skeletor and the forces of evil are Battle Cat, Man-At-Arms, The Sorceress, Teela, and Orko. Battle Cat, a huge armored tiger that can speak, is He-Manās main companion and often carries him and other allies into battle. Man-At-Arms is a trusted confidant of Eterniaās government and planetary monarch and serves as advisor to the royal guard and military police. The Sorceress resides in Castle Greyskull and is the one who gave Prince Adam the Power Sward. Her daughter, Teela, is is captain of the royal guard and charged with protecting Prince Adam but often charges into battle with He-Man, unaware that he and Prince Adam are one in the same.
