How the Small Screen Came to Be

The word comes from Ancient Greek (tèle), meaning "far," and Latin visio, meaning "sight." The first documented usage of the term dates back to 1900, and TV initially became available in crude experimental forms in the late 1920s. However, it was several years before the new technology was marketed to consumers.

A Force in Influencing Public Opinion

After World War II, an improved form of black-and-white broadcasting became popular in the United States and Britain, and sets came to be commonplace in homes, businesses, and institutions. During the 1950s, television was the primary medium for influencing public opinion, and in the mid-1960s, color broadcasting was introduced in the U.S. and most other developed countries.

The Turn of the Century Brought Still More Advances

At the end of the first decade of the 2000s, digital transmissions greatly increased in popularity. Another development was the move from standard definition to high definition, and "smart" devices with integrated Internet and Web 2.0 functions became dominant by the late 2010s.
