In late 1943 the Japanese held numerous strategic Pacific islands, among these was Tarawa. An assault on this position was anticipated and defences were increased to over 4,800 Japanese Navy Troops, including 2,600 men from the Special Naval Landing Force, Japanese Marines. The conflict for Tarawa was a bloody one and at the end of 3 days of intense fighting the island fell to the US Marines. Of the 4,836 Japanese troops on Tarawa only 17 survived the battle.
