The first telling of the story in 1862 was in response to a request from Alice to Lewis during a boating excursion. The Alice Liddell doll has brunette hair that is tied back into tight curls with a white and black bow, is dressed in authentic period costume, and includes a replica of the book Alice's Adventure Under Ground.
