Aircraft carriers are cities at sea, huge places that are constantly bustling with people and movement on every deck. One of the main focal points of these ships is the flight deck, arguably one of the most dangerous places on Earth and a place of highly intense activity. Planes are regularly being launched from the catapults for day and night operations, emitting ear-splitting roars and engine blasts that can knock a person off the deck. Returning from their flights, they land on the deck with a roar, catching their tailhooks on the arresting wire and jolting to a stop. All the while, the flight crews, which all have their own designated duties, work hard to keep everything running smoothly. One of those flight crews is the Crash Crew.

When an accident happens, a swift and accurate response is needed to save lives and eliminate danger. The Crash Crew, a select subgroup of the aviation Boatswain's Mates, is trained to react instantly and accurately when an aircraft crashes. The Crash Crew rushes to the scene on the carrier's P16 fire truck, arriving in just seconds. While others begin putting out the fire, the "hot suit guys" of the Crash Crew immediately move to rescue the pilot from the burning craft. They go into the heart of the fireball, protected by their silver proximity suits that insulate them from the high heat due to a reflective outer layer and an inner vapor barrier. The Crash Crew's first priority is to extract the pilot; next, they have to quickly clear the crash form the flight deck to allow remaining planes to land and return the flight deck operations back to normal. To do that, they bring in the Tillie, the flight deck crane that hauls the crumpled plane from the deck.

The Crash Crew performs their life-saving rescue operations in an environment where decisive action is essential and every second counts. These crews perform constant drills and undergo intense training to ensure that they can respond to a life-or-death situation in an instant. The Crash Crew is another shining example of the dedication, skill and courage of all those who serve in our nation's military forces.
