Newcomer to the franchise, Don Cheadle plays the character alongside Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark. A longtime friend of Stark's, James Rhodes was a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel working for the state department as a liaison to Stark Industries in its arms development capacity. Beyond his official role, Rhodes is a good friend of the eccentric billionaire and one of the few people Stark can count on in an emergency. Immediately recognizing the versatility and power (not to mention fun) of the Iron Man suits, Rhodes was destined to don a suit of his own. In Iron Man 2, Rhodes gets his wish when Stark creates a special armor suit for him that focuses on heavy weaponry. The War Machine armor is bulkier than the Iron Man suits, with large armor plates and reinforced sections on the hips, arms, and torso. Its offensive capability is obvious from the massive Gatling-style cannon on its left shoulder, as well as the twin submachine guns mounted on its forearms.
