Douglas MacArthur:
For his heroic efforts during World War II, General Douglas MacArthur received the Medal of Honor, which his father had also received in the Civil War. They are the first of only two father and sons to both receive this distinguished award.
In 1936, MacArthur was sent to the Philippines as a military advisor to help the country build a military force capable of fighting an enemy attack. When told after 2 years that he would be reassigned, MacArthur retired from the Army, feeling that he had not finished his mission in the Philippines. He subsequently worked there as Field Marshal until 1941, when he was recalled to duty in the United States Army as a Lieutenant general and given command of the forces in the Philippines. The day after the bombing Pearl Harbor, the enemy attacked the Philippines, quickly destroying the air support and soon forcing MacArthur's army to retreat to the Bataan Peninsula.
Advanced Weapons Tester:
Advances in technology are giving the United States military forces new types of weapons to fight the battles of the future. One weapon that may someday be part of every soldier's arsenal is the Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW). This next-generation military rifle can fire different kinds of ammunition, including 5.56 mm projectiles and 20 mm explosive rounds, enabling it to do the work of an M16 rifle, M203 grenade launcher and M4 carbine in one weapon. A laser range finder and miniaturized fuzing system give soldiers the ability to hit targets that are behind protective barriers and cannot be hit directly. Using the laser range finder, they pinpoint the exact spot at which to detonate a round so that the target falls within the blast radius.
