Major League Baseball officially recognized April 15 as "Jackie Robinson Day" in 2004. In 2007, Ken Griffey, Jr. requested permission to wear #42 on that specific day to honor Robinson's legacy. Major League Baseball approved the concept, and all players were given the option of wearing #42 as their uniform number for that day only, in tribute to the truest of baseball heroes. Griffey and Robinson Cano (who is named after Jackie Robinson) wore #42 in 2007 and 2008 as a salute to Jackie Robinson's courage, grace and determination.
