The talking mechanism on the coffee mug is triggered by a button. It makes noise when the button is released. The button is on the bottom of the mug so that it speaks whenever someone picks up the mug. This mechanism can also be turned off so you don't have to hear Ted all the time. The mug is dishwasher safe and has removable/replaceable batteries. Special instructions come with the item to explain how to remove the electronic talking mechanism and batteries so the mug can be washed.
