Meet the teddy bear's namesake! Sounds unbelievable, but it's true: No less than American President Theodore Roosevelt lent his name to the beloved teddy bear. Steiff designers were inspired by this legendary figure and have created a unique homage to the great "Teddy" Roosevelt with this handsome teddy bear on a beautiful horse. The elegant rider is presented as a jointed, cream-colored bear made of the finest alpaca. As a statesman, he's wearing a sand-colored uniform made of cotton, with a leather belt and a brown hat. The brim of his hat is fixed with the gold-plated Steiff "Button in Ear." Teddy's horse is crafted of exquisite mohair and has been realistically hand painted with a great deal of detail. His hooves, the handmade saddle, and the bridle are made of genuine dark-brown leather, decorated with studs and miniatures in perfection. The horse with his rider is mounted on a wooden pedestal whose glazed surface is adorned with a brass plate that bears the inscription "Rough Rider." This astounding work stands 12-inches tall and is part of a limited edition of 1,858 pieces… commensurate with Teddy Roosevelt's year of birth.

On the occasion of Theodore Roosevelt's 100th birthday on June 8, 1958, as a great parade took place in the town of Giengen, Germany, an almost life-sized horse with the figure of Roosevelt was shown on one of the many procession cars. Mounted on his horse, Teddy was dressed in the uniform of the 1st U.S. volunteer cavalry regiment… the Rough Riders.
