Godzilla is hands down the world’s most popular kaiju. The word “kaiju” both refers to a specific genre of Japanese media which features giant monsters and the monsters themselves. These monsters are usually depicted attacking large cities, engaged in combat with the military, or fighting other kaiju in a super-sized smackdown. The kaiju theme actually pre-dates Godzilla, with the first notable example being 1933’s King Kong film. The pair have clashed several times over the years, most notably in 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla and a recent bout in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. The latter was the culmination of a “monster-verse” that began with 2014’s Godzilla and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
