Inspired by the mischievous folkloric creatures invented in the British Royal Air Force at the beginning of the 20th century to explain malfunctions in aircraft, the 1984 comedy-horror film Gremlins was an instant hit that maintains a fan following to this day. It tells the tale of young inventor Randall Peltzer who receives a strange creature as a pet. Unfortunately, that "mogwai" spawns other creatures who transform into small, aggressive, and destructive monsters that wreak havoc on the entire town on Christmas Eve. Adorable Gizmo might be the most popular of the mogwai bunch, but other Gremlins like Stripe and Spike also garner their own share of attention from fans. The movie's success led to another live-action film, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, as well as video games that include Gremlins: The Adventure and Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and a novel.
