Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an American cult television series that aired from March 10, 1997 until May 20, 2003. It was created by writer-director Joss Whedon. The series follows Buffy Anne Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), the latest in a line of young women chosen by fate to battle vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness as the Slayer. Like previous Slayers, Buffy is aided by a Watcher, who guides and trains her. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy surrounds herself with a circle of loyal friends who become known as the "Scooby Gang."
Angel is a spinoff of the Buffy series. It was also created by Joss Whedon (in collaboration with David Greenwalt) and first aired on October 5, 1999. The show details the ongoing trials of the vampire Angel, who has his human soul restored to him by gypsies as punishment for more than a century of murder and torture of innocents. This leaves him tormented by guilt and remorse. The atmosphere of the show is darker, and at times it performed better in the U.S. Nielsen Ratings than its parent series.
