or plundering at sea is known as a "pirate." The earliest documented instances of piracy are the exploits of the Sea Peoples who threatened the Aegean in the 13th century BC. Seaborne piracy against transport vessels remains a significant issue today, particularly in the waters between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, off the Somali coast, and in the Strait of Malacca and Singapore.
