A magnet is an object or material that creates an invisible magnetic field that pulls on other similar materials such as iron, steel, and nickel and attracts or repels other magnets. But did you know that all other substances respond weakly to a magnetic field? Ancient people knew of magnetism from lodestones, which are naturally magnetized pieces of iron ore. Lodestones, suspended so they could turn, were the first magnetic compasses, and the earliest known descriptions of magnets date back about 2,500 years to Greece, India, and China. Various types of magnets exist today, including permanent magnets, electromagnets, and rare earth magnets.
