Recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest continuously running movie franchise, Godzilla is a multi-media series featuring the titular giant lizard-like monster who is often referred to as "Godzilla King of the Monsters," or "Gigantis." The monster’s origins have varied – in the first film Godzilla was the result of American nuclear weapons testing whereas in more recent incarnations of character have depicted the monster as a “titan,” a remnant of a bygone era on Earth millions of years ago who only awakens when there is a shift in the balance of nature, acting almost as the planet’s natural defense system – but regardless of the who, what, and the how, Godzilla has been hugely popular and is a pop culture icon today. Godzilla is hands down the world’s most popular kaiju. The word “kaiju” both refers to a specific genre of Japanese media which features giant monsters and the monsters themselves. These monsters are usually depicted attacking large cities, engaged in combat with the military, or fighting other kaiju in a super-sized smackdown. The kaiju theme actually pre-dates Godzilla, with the first notable example being 1933’s King Kong film. The pair have clashed several times over the years, most notably in 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla and a recent bout in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. The latter was the culmination of a “monster-verse” that began with 2014’s Godzilla and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
